you can use a radioactively oxygen isotop (ex: Oxygen-18) for the sugar and then see if the resulting carbon dioxide is radioactive or not after the chemical reaction. If it is, then you know the oxygen came from the sugar. If not then the oxygen came from the oxygen gas.
