Do you think that technology could someday in fact backfire on us?

Obviously technology is something that's had a huge impact on our lives and that's had a lot more benefits than losses, helping us through communication/trade, transportation, spreading information and basically making our life a whole lot easier. But movies such as The Matrix, Terminator, I Robot, and others display an apocalyptic theme on the idea of enhanced robotics. I am aware that countries such as the the U.S and Japan have already developed and have access to some pretty advanced technologies, but is their a possibility that it will somehow in the future become to difficult to control?
