Why was gandhi admirable?

Mohandus Ghandi, fought against apartae (segregation between whites, coloureds and blacks) in South Africa, and helped to create equality in India between Muslims and Hindu's. He attempted to abolish the caste system in which Hindu's religion and socio cultural structure is based upon, for there is a group of people, called the untouchables, who are heavily discriminated against, and can be beat up for casting a shadow in the path of anyone else. What he done was called them 'Gods children', for we all are, but he is honoured for sacrificing his life for peace. His methods of non-violet protest as mentioned by others was also the basis of many pacifist movements. I hope that helps.
